One Night at Reindeer Camp

A Yup'ik Eskimo reindeer herder was camped and sleeping on the tundra with his reindeer herd. He is awakened by two oddly dressed strangers. The herder believes they may be ircinraat - the little people who roam the tundra and create mischief for people who don't treat them well. He welcomes the strangers and invites them into his tent to get warm and have a cup of tea. A conversation follows that confuses the herder who cannot understand the journey of the visitors. Despite the confusion, the herder finds he shares an interest with them in reindeer. But when the visitors depart, the herder discovers just how different their reindeer are from his own. Read more
